A friend’s visit
Early May brought a very special guest. Scott, one of Mark’s closest friends of over 30 years, flew in from Vancouver and stayed with us for 10 days. We packed in as much as we could! We explored the Lennusadam Seaplane Museum, the Kiek in de Kok Fortifications Museum, the Niguliste Museum, St. Olaf’s Church, and the fascinating Open Air Museum. We also toured Linnahall and the Patarei Sea Fortress, and strolled around our own neighbourhood of Noblessner and the Old Town more times than we can count.
Of course, there was plenty of good food and drinks too. We grabbed incredibly cheesy burgers at Beer and Barrel, sipped wonderful cocktails at Sigmund Freud Cocktail Bar, where the star of the show was a cat-shaped cocktail with a fabulous hairpiece, and where long uncooked macaroni noodles serve as straws (we’d never seen that before!). We also stopped in at the Depeche Mode Bar, a one-of-a-kind spot where they exclusively play Depeche Mode music and you can play pinball machines, truly a unique night out! We caught a stunning sunset from the rooftop bar at Issei, wandered through Kadriorg Park and the Song Festival Grounds, and finished off a brilliant evening at Põhjala Tap Room with delicious beers and a massive sharing plate of BBQ meat. To send Scott off on his last night, we threw a little champagne and cheese party, the perfect ending to a wonderful 10 days!
La visite d’un ami
Au début de mai, on a eu un visiteur très spécial. Scott, un des meilleurs chums de Mark depuis plus de 30 ans, a débarqué de Vancouver pour rester avec nous pendant 10 jours. On a essayé d’en profiter au max! On a visité le musée des hydravions Lennusadam, le musée des fortifications Kiek in de Kok, le musée Niguliste, l’église Saint-Olaf, puis le super musée en plein air. On a aussi fait le tour de Linnahall et de la forteresse maritime de Patarei, sans oublier des tonnes de marches dans notre quartier Noblessner puis dans la vieille ville.
Bien sûr, on a bien mangé et bien bu aussi! On s’est pris des burgers ultra fromage au Beer and Barrel, on a siroté d’excellents cocktails au bar Sigmund Freud, où la vedette de la soirée était un cocktail en forme de chat avec une coiffure spectaculaire, puis où ils servent les drinks avec de longues pâtes macaroni crues en guise de pailles (on avait jamais vu ça de même!). On a aussi fait un arrêt au Depeche Mode Bar, un endroit vraiment unique où ils jouent exclusivement de la musique de Depeche Mode puis où tu peux jouer aux machines de pinball, une soirée bien originale! On a regardé un coucher de soleil à couper le souffle depuis le bar sur le toit de l’Issei, on s’est promené au parc Kadriorg puis sur les terrains du Festival de la chanson, et on a fini une belle soirée au Põhjala Tap Room avec de bonnes bières puis une méga assiette de viandes BBQ à partager. Pour la dernière soirée de Scott, on a organisé un bon vin + champagne et fromages, la parfaite façon de clore 10 jours bien le fun!
First trip to Helsinki
During Scott’s visit in May, the three of us decided to take a day trip to Helsinki, and what a day it was! We took the Tallink ferry for the first time, and it was a wonderful experience, really easy, comfortable and relaxing. Highly recommended as a way to travel!
Once in Helsinki, we packed a lot into one day. We visited Senate Square and the stunning Helsinki Cathedral, the incredible Rock Church carved right into the bedrock, the beautiful Helsinki Central Library Oodi, and the Uspenski Cathedral. We also had an unexpected treat: as we walked past the Presidential Palace, we stumbled upon a diplomatic event, with official cars pulling up one by one, each flying their country’s flag, and a red carpet laid out at the entrance. It was a lovely surprise to witness! We also strolled through the Marina bay area, Esplanade Park, Market Square, and Rautatientori Square.
For food and drinks, we started with lunch at Bryggeri, a great Helsinki brewery where we sat out in the lovely courtyard patio. We then had amazing cocktails at Liberty or Death, absolutely outstanding and highly recommended. We ended the day with a delicious Thai dinner at Boon Nam, the perfect way to finish a fantastic day out.
We absolutely loved Helsinki and Mark and I will definitely be going back, next time for longer, to properly explore the museums, dig into the food and drinks scene, and do some shopping too. One day is simply not enough!
Premier voyage à Helsinki
Pendant la visite de Scott en mai, on a décidé de faire une escapade d’une journée à Helsinki, et quelle journée! On a pris le traversier Tallink pour la première fois, et c’était une expérience vraiment agréable, facile, confortable et relaxante. On le recommande vraiment!
Une fois à Helsinki, on a réussi à faire beaucoup en une seule journée. On a visité la Place du Sénat et la magnifique cathédrale d’Helsinki, l’incroyable église du Rocher creusée à même le roc, la belle bibliothèque centrale d’Helsinki Oodi, puis la cathédrale Ouspenski. On a aussi eu une belle surprise imprévue: en passant devant le Palais présidentiel, on a été témoins d’un événement diplomatique, avec des voitures officielles qui arrivaient une à une, chacune avec le drapeau de son pays, et un tapis rouge déroulé devant l’entrée. C’était vraiment cool à voir! On a aussi marché dans le secteur de la baie de la Marina, le parc de l’Esplanade, la place du Marché, puis la place Rautatientori.
Pour la bouffe et les drinks, on a commencé par dîner au Bryggeri, une brasserie d’Helsinki où on s’est installés dans la belle cour intérieure. On a ensuite savouré d’incroyables cocktails au Liberty or Death, absolument exceptionnels et fortement recommandés. On a terminé la journée avec un délicieux souper thaï au Boon Nam, la parfaite façon de finir une belle journée.
On a vraiment adoré Helsinki et Mark et moi vont certainement y retourner, la prochaine fois pour plus longtemps, pour bien explorer les musées, découvrir les bonnes adresses pour manger et boire, puis faire du magasinage aussi. Une journée, c’est vraiment pas assez!
A little weekend in this beachtown in Estonia – Pärnu
In mid-May, we rented a car and headed to Pärnu, the famous Estonian beach town we had heard so much about. And now we totally understand the hype!
On our first night, we had a lovely dinner at Restoran Borgo, a cute little Italian place that set the tone perfectly for the trip. The next day, we explored the beach area, which is what Pärnu is all about. The beaches were absolutely beautiful, long and wide, with nice sand, benches and parks nearby for people to relax and enjoy. We had lunch at Stalka Resto, a great spot near the beach. Good food, great service and very reasonably priced. The tacos were delicious!
The highlight of the whole trip was without a doubt our visit to Alpakafarm on Saturday. These alpacas are SOOO CUTE! I genuinely wanted to bring one home with me! If you ever visit Pärnu, this is a must. It is only 20 minutes from the city, and spending a few hours there is absolutely worth it. The farm is charming, the animals are adorable, and the staff was incredibly friendly. We will definitely be going back!h
On our last night, we had a fantastic dinner at Como Restoran, with great drinks and live DJs, a perfect way to wrap up the trip.
One fun fact about Pärnu: they love elephants! There are elephant statues scattered all over the city, and the most iconic is the famous slide on the beach. I tried the slide, by the way. It was much higher than I expected and the landing was faster and rougher than I anticipated! I felt like a kid again, ha ha!
Une petite fin de semaine dans cette destination plage en Estonie – Pärnu
À la mi-mai, on a loué une voiture et on a pris la route vers Pärnu, la fameuse ville de plage estonienne dont on avait tellement entendu parler. Et maintenant, on comprend vraiment pourquoi tout le monde en parle!
Le premier soir, on a soupé au Restoran Borgo, un mignon petit resto italien qui a bien mis la table pour la suite du voyage. Le lendemain, on a exploré le secteur de la plage, qui est vraiment le coeur de Pärnu. Les plages étaient absolument magnifiques, longues et larges, avec du beau sable, des bancs et des parcs à proximité pour que les gens puissent relaxer et profiter. On a dîné au Stalka Resto, un super endroit près de la plage. Bonne bouffe, excellent service et prix très raisonnables. Les tacos étaient délicieux!
Le point fort de tout le voyage, sans aucun doute, c’était notre visite à l’Alpakafarm le samedi. Ces alpagas sont TELLEMENT MIGNONS! J’avais vraiment envie d’en ramener un à la maison! Si jamais vous visitez Pärnu, c’est un incontournable. C’est seulement à 20 minutes de la ville, et passer quelques heures là-bas en vaut vraiment la peine. La ferme est charmante, les animaux sont adorables et le personnel était super accueillant. On va certainement y retourner!
Le dernier soir, on a eu un excellent souper au Como Restoran, avec de bons drinks et des DJs en direct, une belle façon de terminer le voyage.
Un fait amusant sur Pärnu: ils adorent les éléphants! Il y a des statues d’éléphants un peu partout dans la ville, et le plus célèbre est la glissade sur la plage. J’ai d’ailleurs essayé la glissade. C’était plus haut que je pensais et l’atterrissage était plus rapide et plus brutal que prévu! Je me suis sentie comme une enfant, ha ha!
